What is a power of attorney in the UAE?

A power of attorney (POA) is a legal document in which you, the principal, authorise another person, the attorney, to act for you: selling a car, managing a company or appearing in court, for example. To be relied on by UAE authorities, banks and courts, a POA is notarized by a notary public and written in Arabic, or in Arabic and English.

Choosing the scope

General or special power of attorney?

Broad authority

General POA

Lets your attorney act for you across many matters, such as accounts, authorities and everyday transactions. Useful when you will be away for a long time.

One defined act

Special POA

Covers only what it names, such as selling one car or one property. Most UAE authorities expect a special POA for sales and transfers.

How it is signed

Three ways to sign a power of attorney

In person

Before a notary in the UAE

Sign before a notary public in any emirate. We prepare the draft in advance, so the appointment is short.

Remote

By video call

A UAE notary checks your identity on a video call and you confirm with a one-time code. Available for many types of POA.

Abroad

From outside the UAE

Sign at a UAE embassy or before a local notary. The POA is then legalised, attested in the UAE and translated into Arabic.

Power of attorney: common questions

What is a power of attorney in the UAE?

A legal document in which the principal authorises another person to act for them. It is notarized by a notary public so that UAE authorities, banks and courts can rely on it.

How do I make a power of attorney in Dubai?

An advocate drafts it in Arabic, or in Arabic and English, and you sign it before a notary public, in person or by video call. The notarized POA is then ready to use. See general and special POA.

What is the difference between a general and a special POA?

A general POA covers many matters broadly. A special POA covers only the acts it names, such as selling a specific car or property. Read the full comparison.

Can I make a UAE power of attorney from abroad?

Yes. By remote notarization over a video call where allowed, or at a UAE embassy or local notary followed by attestation and translation. See power of attorney from abroad.

Which POA do I need to sell a car or property?

A special POA that names the car or the property. See vehicle power of attorney and real estate power of attorney.

Does a power of attorney have to be in Arabic?

Arabic is required to use a POA before UAE authorities and courts. We draft POAs in Arabic and English, so you can read exactly what you sign.

How long is a power of attorney valid in the UAE?

Until the period stated in it ends, its task is completed or you revoke it. It also ends on the death of the principal. Some authorities, such as the Dubai Land Department, may ask for a recently issued POA.

Can I cancel a power of attorney?

Yes. You sign a revocation before the notary, in person or remotely, and the attorney and authorities are notified. See how to cancel a POA.

Can a company give a power of attorney?

Yes. A company can authorise a manager, employee or advocate through a POA signed by its authorised signatory, supported by the trade licence and company documents. See company management POA.

How much does a power of attorney cost?

Fees depend on the type of POA and how it is signed. Send your request and we confirm a clear quote before any work starts.
